More Like Him

This past few years, I’ve been learning what its like to live a life that is deeper and one that is more a reflection of what Christ is and how to be more like him. I’m not going to front like its hasn’t been a struggle. Why has it been a struggle? Because I have constantly had to fight with my flesh (self). I’ve had to stay away from the dead man(old self or old nature) that Christ saved me from when I asked him into my life.

When you get saved you become more aware of the sin in your life because you inherit the spirit and conviction of God; and so a war begins internally in your body. My mum always told me “Agozie, you are a war already won“. I never really understood fully what that meant because everyday was a struggle for me. I had to understand that we Christians are constantly fighting a defeated enemy because Christ won the ultimate battle for us , the one he did on the cross was the greatest blow to the enemy.

More of Him and None of  You

Secondly,  I have come to learn that to be more like him is to be NOTHING of you.  I was going to use the word ‘LESS’ but even that is too much. When light comes in to our life darkness can not coexist with light. So everyday through the grace of God you have to rid yourself of yourself of  your sinful nature. For me this looks like searching in my life and calling those sinful tendencies out and bringing them at the feet of Christ for help. I, on my own, with my efforts will fail and fail again because with-out Christ I can do nothing.

He wants us to ask for his help and his guidance. He wants to be a full part of your life not just half or quarter of it. Allow self to completely die. (John 15:5) “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Being more like Him is accepting the Cross in an imperfect world. Now accepting the cross doesn’t mean that we do not have power against those things. It is realizing that those things don’t have permanent power or a lasting impression on our lives. Only Christ’s impact has a lasting impression on us. This could look like going on that mission trip that might inconvenience you, but affect the lives of many for Christ .

Search Yourself

You have to search yourself and ask God, what part of your burden for the kingdom do you want me to bear?  Christ is such a personal being and His short life here on earth was laced with tribulations and the greatest sacrifice. So to really understand His nature is to accept and ask for His will to be done in your life. My mum always prayed a prayer that I had a hard time understanding. She would say ” Christ brings me more suffering, if that will only bring me closer to you”. I would with one eye open, halfheartedly and say Amen. The beauty about that prayer is that she understands that without Christ, she is nothing and so her desire was to constantly be at the foot of his cross. (1 Peter 3:14) “But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed and do not fear their intimidation.

Choose Christ

  • To be more like Christ is to choose Christ completely, you cannot serve two Gods.  Everyday, I have to choose Christ over my worldly desires, choose Christ over my pride, choose Christ over my anxiety, choose Christ over my hurt, choose Christ over the lies of the enemies. I have to completely trust in God and what he has for me. (Proverbs3:5-6) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Learn to Love Sacrificially

  • You have to learn to love just as Christ loved and to know how to love you have to immerse yourself in the word of God. A perfect example of the love of God is the death that he died for us, this is an example of sacrificial love. We as the people of God are called to a sacrificial love and this is daily tested in us with the people we meet our family and loved ones.

Wrap Up

The shortcut to this whole blog post is to make the Word of the Lord the standard you live by, we need to be constantly fed by Christ. We cannot seek to be more like Christ and be as empty vessels. To be more like Him is to know about Him.

Amen! Emptying our lives of ourselves to be filled with Him is a process but it is worth it! Keep smiling, Sister!
